OFAKLS & OFA Singapore Gathering
What is it like to reconnect with a group of school alumni?
I recently had the privilege of attending an amazing Old Frees gathering in Singapore. It was an unforgettable experience where I met many new friends and rekindled old relationships. A big thank you to Ivan Ooi, who came all the way from KL to help make this event happen, and to our Singapore counterpart, Ryan Lee, for his incredible effort in organising it.
The gathering felt more like a family reunion than anything else. Everyone was eagerly comparing which year they attended Penang Free School, the oldest school in Southeast Asia—a school with a rich history and notable alumni, including Malaysia’s first Prime Minister.
That day, I discovered the diversity and brilliance of our alumni network. I met a neurosurgeon, a semi-retired chairman of a listed company, a successful SME owner, and world class lecturers/advisors; all of whom made me feel truly at home. The bond we shared, built on our shared attachment to the school and our hometown, was nothing short of incredible.
Many alumni have been in Singapore for decades, having moved here early in their careers. Some shared stories about their children now studying abroad at universities, reflecting the generations of growth and achievement that our community has fostered.
This gathering reminded me of the strength of our shared history and the importance of staying connected. To all my fellow Frees—here’s to many more reunions like this in the future!
